How the Contest Works

Players open up the junaio application available on the iPhone App Store and tune into the ScavengAR channel.

Player's camera is on live view. This view will display a range of pre-set geo/AR tags created for the game within about 30 feet. Tags first appear as question marks.

When close enough to the tags, players click question mark Geo/AR marker to collect the clue and score points.

When a player has found a geo tag, they have the opportunity to create media and/or notify friends on the Twitter platform of their progress (#scavengAR on Twitter)

There will also be physical tags (black and white square markers) hidden in approved locations. At these select locations players can take a picture of a physical marker within the application and see a 3D object inserted into the scene, above the tag. Once players do this they score additional points.

Players can also tag their own photos or texts and leave them in any location. The tags they create are automatically placed in their channel and can help players earn extra points towards the game. These tags can also be seen by their "friends" in the channel. (but not by all participants)

To move to another location, players use the map view or list view to see the map/list of all game clues and find another location containing tags. Not all geo tags will have corresponding physical marker.

Users will have access to a mechanism to view their scores and compare them to the game leaders.

During or after the game, users can go online to www.junaio.com/sxsw to see all the tags that SXSW players have created and view the leaderboard.

WHY AR?

What is Augmented Reality?

From imedia: Augmented Reality: What Marketers Need to Know, December 2009 Augmented reality (AR) has become a hot topic online, particularly in light of the release of Google Goggles and Yelp's Monocle app that allows users to see location-based reviews hovering on their iPhone screens. The technology has provoked repeat interest from Mashable, Wired, Fast Company, and ReadWriteWeb, while companies like IBM, GE, Best Buy, P&G, and Wal-Mart are moving beyond pure gimmick to truly connect with consumers via AR.

The seminal promise of AR is as the touchstone technology allowing social networks, geo-based tracking, and the semantic web to converge. Put less geekily, think of AR as your personalized digital butler, who will get to know your behavior so specifically that it can prethink your choices based on your friends, location, and how you search online. The cyberpunk fictions have come to reality with AR, and the cultural ramifications are as powerful as the marketing opportunities.

Isn't it Just Hype?
It can be. Like most emerging technologies, many folks are using AR solely as a 3-D gimmick to market a product. However, they're also marketing the technology as well, and drawing attention to this emerging communications channel means people get exposed to it so they'll be more likely to adopt it later on.

AR has been around for over 20 years and is just now getting mainstream attention because the technology is finally available on many smart phones. And companies like Google coming into the space (Google Goggles) means adoption will start escalating quickly. We may go in a downward hype spiral for a bit but soon we'll all be wearing specialized AR glasses or even contact lenses with digital information overlaid on them. For more thoughts on the hype thing, check out Fast Company's great article, Augmented Reality is Both a Fad and The Future.

Why is a PR firm doing Augmented Reality? Proximity based communication is a natural growth area for Porter Novelli. As a company, we focus on creating insights that leverage Intelligent Influence-our methodology for helping clients identify and participate in the right conversations at the right time, and employing best of breed technology to do so. Coupling Intelligent Influence with location-aware technologies will help us explore and affect where conversations happen, how people create visual/virtual stories, and how these elements spread through social networks.

As part of our dedication to developing new technological directions for our clients, Porter Novelli developed ScavengAR, with (AR) experts Metaio to create a mobile experience that allows users to both collect and leave geo-focused visual data, while testing certain aspects of gaming- derived incentive structures that are seeing notable success in related mobile channels.

The Society for New Communications Research (SNCR)
Beyond the game portion of ScavengAR, Porter Novelli will also be investigating some key issues surrounding location aware technology and social networking, such as:

  • Privacy
  • Virtual Air Rights (the nature of advertising via The Outernet, or the virtual new frontier created by location based technologies)
  • Location aware advertising/commerce

We're working with SNCR to create a case study based on ScavengAR and would welcome any thoughts you may have on how you see emerging technologies like AR affecting culture in the future. Click on the check box for a follow up, or email john.havens@porternovelli.com to get involved. Thanks in advance for your interest.

Hey-I don't have the right smartphone and/or it's not working for me and I'm peeved.
First off, apologies if you can't participate in the game. Hopefully you have a friend with the new iPhone or Windows Mobile Phone. We're also creating a video case study of ScavengAR and if you email John at john.havens@porternovelli.com he'll send you a link to the file when it's done.

However, our primary focus on creating the game is in giving people a glimpse into the future versus just having fun with a scavenger hunt. We mentioned Virtual Air Rights above - if you had a chance to tag Robert Scoble (junaio lets you actually leave virtual tags on Robert's T-Shirt like 3-D sticky notes) you start to see the ramifications of how AR will transform communication and culture. If you need another sample along these lines, check out the video below from The Astonishing Tribe (TAT), a company that's produced a facial recognition technology called Recognizr:.

You may think this example is creepy or Stalker 2.0. But the technology isn't inherently good or evil-it's how people use it that brings the moral issue into play. You can see more videos and read how AR is reshaping society in the iMedia article we mentioned above.
